Two separate wrecks involving five vehicles on I-29 caused quite a scene on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in Atchison County.

The first crash occured at the 112 mile-marker, two miles north of Rock Port on southbound I-29. A 2023 Kenworth T680, driven by a 57-year-old male from Memphis, Tennessee, was southbound on the interstate and a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia, driven by a 58-year-old male from Perris, California, was stationary on the west shoulder of the interstate. The Kenworth travelled off of the right side of the roadway and its front right bumper struck the towed unit of the Freightliner. The Kenworth overturned off of the west side of the roadway, struck an embankment and came to rest on its passenger side facing east. The Freightliner remained stationary on the shoulder facing southbound. The driver of the Kenworth, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries and was transported by an Atchison-Holt ambulance to Community Hospital-Fairfax in Fairfax, Missouri. The driver of the Freightliner did not report any injuries at the scene. The Kenworth was totaled and towed from the scene by Double M Towing. The Freightliner sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene. The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper R.K. Mott, who was assisted by Sgt. T.L. Shupe, Trooper E.M. Sigman, Trooper N.M. Newland, CVO J.E. Lawrence, CVO B.M. Grier, CVO B.K. England, the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, the Rock Port Police Department, the Rock Port Fire Department, and the Atchison-Holt Ambulance District.

The second crash occured at the 112.4 mile-marker, two miles north of Rock Port on southbound I-29. The crash occurred as a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia, driven by a 61-year-old male from Coquitlan, British Columbia, Canada, was travelling southbound on I-29 and crashed into two other vehicles stopped on the roadway due to a crash ahead. The 2020 Freightliner failed to yield, striking the towed unit of a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia, driven by a 39-year-old male from Clearfield, Utah. That impact caused the 2022 Freightliner to strike the towed unit of a 2026 Volvo VNL, driven by a 47-year-old male from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The 2020 Freightliner came to rest in the southbound passing lane, facing south on its wheels. The 2022 Freightliner and the Volvo came to rest partially on the southbound shoulder facing south on their wheels. The driver of the 2022 Freightliner had been wearing a seat belt, but suffered minor injuries. He was transported by an Atchison-Holt ambulance to Community Hospital-Fairfax in Fairfax. The 2020 and 2022 Freightliners were both totaled and towed from the scene by Double M Towing. The Volvo suffered minor damage and was driven from the scene. The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper E.M. Sigman, who was assisted by Sgt. T.L. Shupe, Trooper R.K. Mott, Trooper N.M. Newland (926), CVO J.E. Lawrence, CVO B.M. Grier, CVO B.K. England, the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, the West Atchison Fire Protection District, and the Atchison-Holt Ambulance District.
