• Thieves got away with 59 young Hampshire pigs at the Deering Scamman farm in the Union City neighborhood Friday night of last week. Bill Scamman, who operates his father’s farm, was in town during the evening. The pigs averaged about 65 pounds each and were valued at $1,000 or more. They had been placed in a pen where there is a loading chute, and the presumption is that the thieves had no trouble backing a truck up to the chute to load the pigs. Neighbors report that they saw lights from a vehicle near the pen about 7:00 o’clock. Loss of the pigs was discovered Sunday morning, when the lack some of the lot was apparent when not all of the lot showed up at feeding time. The thieves were bold in their operation as the theft apparently took place early in the evening rather than during the night.
