Last week, the Rock Port Blue Jays had their last home game of the season against the Nodaway Valley Thunder. Both teams went into the game with a winning record of 7-0. The game featured a competitive matchup between the two teams’ quarterbacks, Rock Port’s Westyn Amthor, and Nodaway Valley’s Braxton McGinness. Although both quarterbacks are ranked top 5 in the state, they both bring a unique playing style to the field.
Head coach Dalton Jones has this to say about the comparisons: “I think they are both up there in the state ranking of quarterbacks. They just have different things to offer. Braxton is quick and agile, and he can run the ball really well. Westyn has a wide range when it comes to passing, and he plays confidently, and doesn’t fold under pressure. And while I don’t know Braxton’s leadership level, I know that Westyn is an amazing captain and manages the team well.”
The game ended with an impressive score of 92-60 with the Blue Jays coming out on top. Both quarterbacks played an impressive game, but one team outshined another on Friday. The MSHAA class 1 record for most points scored by one team in the last ten years was made by Greenville Highschool in 2017 with 102-point win. The Blue Jays inched close to that on Friday, Dalton made the executive decision to kneel the ball on Blue’s last possession and not go for 100 points. “We had already won, I didn’t see the need to run the clock out. 100 points isn’t necessarily a goal of ours. Although I will say, I wasn’t aware of the record.” Jones explained.
Assistant coach Reven Herron was asked about his thoughts of Nodaway Valleys quarterback, post-game. Herron says “Braxton definitely plays more of a part in their running game this year, due to losing their starting running back from last year. The way he can run the ball is definitely one of his strengths. As for Westyn, the way he can throw the ball is incredible. We ask Wes to throw more difficult and skilled passes then they ask of Braxton, and Westyn always delivers. I believe he has about 70% accuracy. Westyn is never afraid to take a hit, and his decision making also plays a big part in who he is as a quarterback.”
Attempts were made to contact the Nodaway Valley coaching staff for an interview but no response was given.
The Blue Jays are going into this week keeping their winning record, automatically securing the number 1 seed spot in districts, with a first-round bye. Stay tuned for more weekly articles by the Rock Port Mass Media staff!
