• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Sundown In Santa Fe,” “Red Head And The Cowboy” starring Glenn Ford, Edmond O’Brien, and Rhonda Fleming, and “Getting Gertie’s Garter.”

• The efficiency of air mail service is demonstrated by a letter postmarked May 24 at Baijnath, Kangra, India, which reached The Mail May 31 – just one week after mailing. The letter is from Miss Letah Doyle, missionary, whose station is in Meerut, India.

• The body of John R. Hartman, son of Dick Hartman of Watson, was among those of 374 American soldiers scheduled to arrive in San Francisco from Korea last Monday. Hartman lost his life in warfare in Korea.

• Ralph Knierim found a wristwatch he lost five years ago in the same cornfield in which it was lost and which had been farmed every one of those years since disappearing. The case was bright and the crystal unbroken. The watch had been a gift to Gussie Knierim from his parents in 1943.

• The life of a rural mail carrier is “just one thing after another.” This was demonstrated one morning last week when Glen Miller, carrier on Route No. 1 out of Rock Port, went to the rescue of two goats belonging to Ray King, Jr. The two goats, tethered together by a rope, had wandered and fallen off an embankment. The rope caught on a projection and suspended the goats in midair.

• Chapter 440, Order of Eastern Star of Rock Port, honored Miss Mary Jane Truman and Byrne E. Bigger, Worthy Grand Matron and Worthy Grand Patron, respectively, last Friday evening at the Memorial Building. Miss Truman is President Harry S. Truman’s sister.

June 10, 1976

• The driver of a tractor trailer was pinned in the cab of his truck for at least an hour when the truck he was driving overturned at the turn-off ramp at the U.S. Hwy. 136 and I-29 junction. The truck was traveling west on the highway and attempted to take the northbound ramp, but when the truck turned, the brakes failed, causing the truck to take the turn too quickly and overturning.

• A prefab home business plus a floor covering and drapery firm is being established in Rock Port. Mr. Jerry Meyer will open an office for Wick Homes, which specializes in building prefabricated homes. In the basement he and his wife have purchased will be another business, Meyer Specialty, which will display a variety of floor coverings and draperies.

• Hippo Melvin Oil Company purchased at public auction the six-room home of the late Mattie Bailey June 7, located at 308 Kansas Street.

• Rock Port Elementary students in Mr. Cretsinger’s science class held a science fair and the top three winners were supposed to win a trip to Worlds of Fun. However, the students did such an outstanding job that Mr. C. decided to take the top seven to Worlds of Fun by way of a limousine.

• The 50th reunion celebration of the Rock Port High School class of 1951 began Friday, May 25, with a dinner at Wheeler Inn in Auburn. The fun continued Saturday night at the alumni banquet and dance. Goodbyes were said Sunday morning at a continental breakfast at Bank Midwest.

• Mrs. Sue Owen held her yearly summer golf lessons at the Rock Port Golf Course and at Rock Port R-II. The participants were taught the basics of golf, proper putting, and the rules of the course.
